US-India Trade Agreement Lowers Luxury Auto Tariffs, Excludes EVs
The United States and India have finalized a trade agreement that significantly reduces import duties on American luxury automobiles and motorcycles. Gasoline-powered vehicles with engine displacements exceeding 3,000cc will see tariffs drop from 110% to 30% over the next decade. Harley-Davidson motorcycles gain complete tariff exemption.
Notably absent from the pact are electric vehicles, leaving companies like Tesla waiting for improved market access. The omission highlights the uneven progress in trade liberalization for emerging technologies.
The deal includes a $500 billion commitment from India to purchase American goods, signaling a strategic shift away from Russian energy imports. This realignment carries both economic and geopolitical implications as India strengthens ties with Western markets.
